Backpacking Jay Cooke

Jay Cooke is absolutely beautiful! Brooke and I took off on Tuesday for Brooke's first backpacking adventure - and my first without Matt. Overall we did pretty well. We hiked about 3 miles into our remote site, and then about 2.5 miles out (taking a different trail). My pack was about 35 lbs. and Brooke's was close to 25 lbs. Then once we set up our site we hiked at least another mile in to checkout another site.

The experience wasn't quite what I expected. The trails on the first half of the hike were pretty nice, but once we got back in there it was obvious they weren't used all that much. We walked through grass up to our waist and got covered in ticks. We must have pulled dozens and dozens and DOZENS of ticks off of us. Even at our site they were so thick we could see them crawling on the ground like ants - it was almost like out of a horror movie.

The weather was great, and it didn't start raining until we were just yards from the parking lot. It was a fantastic adventure - and we are already talking about where we want to go for our next adventure. The hardest part? Leaving David. I couldn't wait to get back to him.
